Growing up in a soccer/football nation, EPL and UEFA were acronyms used in daily conversation. Then I moved to Canada and NHL replaced those acronyms. From an outsider's perspective, hockey was basically synonymous with Canadians, and would only come up when the subject is about the latter. After living here for 4 years, it has definitely been a privilege to see how completely different sports can be glorified in different parts of the world. The magnitude of how important they are in these people's lives is insurmountable. On two separate occasions I have heard the soccer pitch and the hockey rink be compared to cathedrals, and the sport a religion. Come this Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks will be playing Game 1 of the third round of the NHL Playoffs; the first time in 17 years that they've reached the Western Conference Finals. To the rest of the world, Sunday may be just another day and hockey a distant thought, but to this Canadian city, the hockey gods will be called upon.
